To fix WD Discovery when it is not working or failing to detect your external drives, you must first determine if the problem lies with the software permissions, unsupported hardware, or a faulty USB connection.

Western Digital has heavily phased out WD Discovery. If your drive works fine in Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder, the issue is strictly a software glitch with the legacy app itself.

Follow these progressive troubleshooting steps to fix the application and make your drive visible. 1. Verify Drive Compatibility

Not all Western Digital drives are built to work with the companion software suite.

Check the Model: Entry-level drives like the standard WD Elements are deliberately not supported by WD Discovery or WD Drive Utilities. They are meant to be plug-and-play.

Avoid Excluded Devices: Internal hard drives and memory card readers are completely unsupported by WD Discovery.

Connection Type: The software generally does not recognize supported drives if they are connected via a native Thunderbolt port on Mac. Use a standard USB port instead. 2. Fix Software Glitches & Permissions

If you are using a supported drive (like a My Passport or My Book) and it still says “No USB device connected,” optimize the app settings: WD discovery says no USB drive connected – My Passport
